Translational Pain Research

The treatment of pain faces enormous challenges given its diverse and highly individual etiology. New insights into the cellular mechanisms of pain are therefore urgently needed. The Translational Pain Research unit investigates the reaction of the pain-initiating sensory neurons, i.e. the nociceptors, to a multitude of stimuli. The focus of our research is a concept of intracellular signal integration of which we analyze the core components. The aim is to clarify how the cell "calculates" pain-modulating neuronal activity from this signal processing and how this translates to long-term changes of nociceptors.
